When the mall based specialty apparel realizes that this database driven system will require the creation of another staff member to fully load and manage...the idea will probably be quickly scrapped. This is based on my experience as a software implementation consultant who assists companies on the front end of product development software roll outs. They will go to great lengths to avoid adding to headcount/fixed, permanent overhead costs.

I guess the longer you hold it, the more time you have to examine the product and determine a fair price. This could work both ways, what if a poor quality product was used? Maybe the 30 second bids would be lower than the 10 second bids.

Yet another reason why CC is failing. The reason people see the bow is the striking contrast it has with the rest of the page. After seeing the text, the people who are clicking on it are the ones who are trying to shop with no money. Then up pops a page telling me to by a blue-ray... fail.

Meanwhile other stores have brought back layaway - now that's catering to a crowd of people on a budget.

Glad to see things back in action, over here...

I don't think this design -needs- the explanation; I think it'd work fine without it. But I like that Amazon has called it out, giving anyone interested a bit of insight into their design. It's out of the way enough so that it doesn't interfere with the main goals of the page/experience.

Good stuff.

It's funny you say that. I don't remember what website I was one, but when I entered in my address, it knew that it was an apartment building. Maybe it knew because it pulled back multiple records for the same address, but I am speculating that was the case.

One thing that confused me recently was a visit to Amazon.com's website only to find even an additional Address Line 3. Now what the heck is that going to be used for?

Keep it hidden in my opinion. Not only does it take up as much space as the line itself, it is different than expected but not better or any easier. This makes the user needlessly think when they should be simply buying things.

How long until we can make a database that is robust enough to add a second line based on the first? As in... that address is an apartment building, better provide a second line...

Thanks for commenting Justin. I've been trying to learn more about cart remarketing, but switched to an internal project and haven't had a lot of time to research more.

Your site is an excellent source of information and I have enjoyed reading your posts. :)

I've had great results using cart remarketing emails. With one particular client, we sent a basic, all text email to customers that abandon on the payment screen, which is signed by a customer service staff person. The email is written in such a fashion that it show genuine concern for them, asking if there was anything confusing or broken on the website. Many customers reply back and thank them for the courtesy. It has also been very successful at capturing would be lost sales.
